Under 9s v Shevington

Under wet conditions and against a strong Shevington side, Burtonwood U 9s' defence stood solid, to claim a 3-1 win to start the new season under today's captain Jake Williams.

The opposition were well organised and threw the ball around confidently, maintaining an ongoing threat to our line. However, mid way through the first half, Bulldogs took the lead with a well taken try from George Roby. Some great tackling was to follow from the whole team to keep out the opposition until they equalised just before half time.

The second half remained as intense as earlier with some solid straight runs, but yet again, our defence stood proud with some robust tackles from Declan, Joe, Thomas, Richard and Aaron, including several try saving tackles from George and Charlie.

The lead was regained when Aaron Lee broke a tackle to sprint from our own half to score in the corner.

More solid attack was to follow, culminating in Charlie scoring the final try, to win a hard fought game.

Speedy Recovery

The players and parents of the Under 14's would like to wish Shaun a speedy recovery following his unfortuante injury at the weekend. Shaun suffered a broken tibia when playing away at Blackpool Scorpions and spent the night in hospital in order for him to have a minor operation the following morning to repair the broken leg. He will be a big loss to the team having only recently returned to good form after a four week absence following a hand injury.

Winter Training Facility

Can all coaches please ensure that all teams take away or place in a bin any bottles or paper cups that they bring to training and please make parents and players aware of the same.
Alex has recently had an incident of a horse trying to eat a plastic bottle and ended up with quite a big vets bill.
This is obviously unacceptable practice and as previously noted the same standard of tidiness should be carried forward on match days and training sessions on the pitches at fir tree lane.

Your co-operation and vigilance would be greatly appreciated on this matter.

U9s vs Wigan St Judes (Golds)

Following a long winter break, the Under 9s are back with a great win at home against a spirited St Judes team.

The Bulldogs, guided by today's captain Ellis Jones went into an early lead through a great individual try from George Roby, however, the game was kept quite tight for the initial quarter with both teams trading tries until Burtonwood started to take control, going into half time 4-2 up.

After the break, things really started to open up with some strong running on the edges by our faster runners. The breaks, and subsequent tries, were made all the more notable by our steely defence, which, by working together, kept firm control of the game. On several occasions the oppositions' outside men were bundled into touch and their big forwards made limited metres down the middle.

Highlights of the game were Joe Barnes' long pass out wide for Aaron Lee to score in the 1st half, Richard Hansley's textbook tackle to stop a certain try from their biggest player, and Joe Paynes' barnstorming run down the middle to score a near full length try.

Notwithstanding the above, every player made their efforts count and the whole team played well.

Tryscorers: George Roby (4), Joe Barnes (3), Aaron Lee, Declan France & Joe Payne.

Man of the Match: Declan France

Top Attacker: Joe Payne

Top Tackler: Richard Hansley

WELL DONE ALL

U9s vs Newton Storm

Following a great win last week, Burtonwood faced a tough away challenge to an unbeaten Newton Storm.

Under the captaincy of George Roby, the team played probably their best performance of the season, but, unfortunately it was not enough against a well drilled Newton side who were value for their unbeaten run!

Nevertheless, some strong running from the boys, coupled with a magnificent defensive effort, with everyone working for one another kept both teams level pegging at half time.

Notable first half moments came from Joe Barnes' & Aaron Lee's tries and our holding defence which needed to be sharp against Newton's quick play the balls.

The second half continued in the same vein, however, 2 quick tries from the home side never looked like being levelled up between two such evenly balanced sides.

A brilliant solo try from George Roby made the score more respectable in what was a great game all round.

Standouts today were Aaron, Charlie, Ellis & Patrick for making some tough yards down the centre. George, Joe & Declan for some great running out wide and Richard for making the acting half back role his own.

Best of all though, was the way our defence have really began to move in as a unit, forming a formidable line, fit to face any opposition!

Man of the Match: George Roby

Top Attacker: Joe Barnes

Top Tackler: Patrick McCarron

A huge 'thank you' to the friends and family of the U15's Blue team for supporting the quiz / auction night on Saturday 23rd April. The team also wish to thank Rhys and Ben Evans, ex-Bulldogs, now with Warrington, who came to the event and brought some items to auction. Congratulations to those who successfully bid for the Wolves shirt signed by Rhys, and the ball signed by both Rhys and Ben. Special thanks to auctioneer Mark Moore, a second career selling ice to eskimos on the cards! The lads were very happy with their collective, successful bid for coach Lee Howieson, I'm sure he's really looking forward to whatever they have in store for him!!! Thank you once again to everyone who supported this night.

Temporary Changing Rooms

Thanks to all that turned up this morning (Saturday) to help commence the refurbishment. We commenced by ripping out the old toilets and showers. This wasn't the most pleasant of tasks a few clothes pegs for the nose would have helped during this phase.
We then decided upon a new layout and ripped outsom e existing partition wall and doors which filled our skip.

Our chairman followed us up his dustpan and brush, which was still too much effort for his glass back!

Next task will be to undertake some minor repairs to the floor and the installtion of lighting, prior to the laying of a new floor.
If anyone is in the business or knows someone who is in the trade of floor laying,we will be looking for approxitmate 900 sqr ft of roll end of vinyl flooring to put down in the not too distant future.

We will then be organising the joiners in to fit out the new partitiions.

We will keep you updated of progressand of the next date when any assistance would be gratefully appreciated

Every parent/player received them before the season finished.

Players who have not returned them won't be eligible to play, these forms are important.

U13's v Thatto Heath 4 Sept

Good game between 2 well matched sides. The big plus for the Bulldogs is the vast improvement since the last 2 significant defeats at the hands of the Crusaders.
Bruce opened up the scoring for the Bulldogs and converted well which shocked the home team into into action. Thatto showed some great handling skills throughout the game and came back with to well worked tries both of which were converted (one from a wide position). However a solo effort from Burce stole the show whereby he collected from his own chip through to race to the line from around 30 yards out. Unfortunatley Bruce missed the kick on this occasion, which left the score at 12-10.
Thatto Heath followed up with a try from their impressive No 12, which was also converted and left the home side with a 22-10 advantage at the break.

At the start of the 2nd half the hosts quickly extended their lead with an unconverted try. However, the Bulldogs hit back with another converted try form Jack. Again Heath regained the 16 point margin but a 2nd converted try from Jack followed up with the final score of the game, a well worked try for Brad Owen, left the score at a respectable 32-26 to the hosts.

Great game boys. The hard work is playing off and some kind words from Heath proved our worthiness of this division.

Thanks to the ref for a good game and thanks to the hosts.

U13's v St Pats (36-12)

Great display, against a Pats side the Dogshave not managed to beat in 6 years of rugby. The gane started very even with both sides defending wellacross the park. However, Jack Field came on as prop and started to ask questions of the visitors defence in the middle. He quickly punched through on a couple of occassions that were complemented by conversions from Bruce Martinus. Not to be outdone Bruce then found his own way to the tryline and added a third goal that meant the hosts went into the interval with a 18-0 lead.
After the break Burtonwood kept up the pressure and another try each for Bruce and Jack saw the Bulldogs with a 26-0 lead.
Undetered by the defecit the Wigan never gave up and came back strongly with 2 well worked tries, firstly from their no.9 (Lyas Culshaw) and then from a great run down the outside by No. 5 (Connor Galvin), both of which were converted by Sam Grant (No.4).
St Pats continued with the pressure with some strong tackling, keeping Burtonwood pegged back in their own half.
The patience paid of for the home side, who more than matched the Pats in defence when after a good set up field, Joe Heaton managed to dive over from close range. Conversion again by Bruce.
To finish the scoring a long ball out from Bruce allowed Brad Owen to touch down, to make it a personal 2 in 2.

Congratulations to all 17 + the 3 guys that didnt get a game today. Great work form Danny and Chip hitting the ball up. Superbly supported by Jamie and Ben Legge.
Whilst Bruce and Jack got 1 and 2 from the opposition coaches, No.3 today was given to Matty Davies for both his attack and defence in the Centre position.
Joseph Frith worked hard from both full back and centre brinigng the ball out well. Ben Stevens organised well from scrum half. Matty Barton filled in a full back admirably. James Dalton offered a good first half at hooker and it was good to see Adam Ireland having his first run out of the season, getting back into the swing of things at hooker quickly. Alex Good Marsh played well drving in well and showing good handling skills at both loose and 2nd row. Whilst Callum Gallagher and Joe Mannion held the postions on the wing, giving little space for opposition attack to work in. Joe also did more than his fair share of the work load in relieving the forwards.

Lets continue to build on the training boys. (A big thanks from all the coaches)

U13's 28 v Ince Rose Bridge 28 (Draw)

Yet another great game at the "Kennel" with the spoils being shared at 28 each against an extremely strong defensive Ince Rose Bridge.
However, yet again the Bulldogs proved their worth and had a great chance to win the game. Ince could as easily won the game after coming back to score a try in the last minute to level the scores, with the No.1 (full back - Lowery) who had kicked very well throughout, unfortunately missing the conversion with the final kick of the game.

Initialy Burtonwood had all the pressure on the visitors line but it took a while for them to break through, with Jack Field scoring the first from a couple of yards out, followed up by Adam Ireland dving over from even closer range after a good platform had been set up by the forwards. The second try was coverted by Bruce Martinus. The visitors then hit back with the 1st of four tries from the strong running and very impressive No.19, M.Berry. This was then converted and left the half time score 10-6 to the hosts.

Both sides had great defence for the first 25 mins.

The tide changed at the turn of the half, with Matty Berry running rampant down the centre of the field to score a brace of tries (one of which was converted) to take Ince into a 18 - 10 lead.
At this stage the 'Dogs' could easily have rolled over, but they stuck to the task in hand admirably, upping the defence and continuing to work in attack. Bruce got us moving again with yet another short range try, which he converted. This was shortly followed up by a long range effort from Ben Stevens, recordng his first score for the Bulldogs, since his recent free transfer signing from Moorfield, under the Bosman ruling. The try came after some midfiled pressure where after an attempted interception from Joe Frith, the ball was deemed to come off his chest. This was swooped upon by the scrum half who raced 50 yards out pacing and eventually fending off his opposite number to score close to the sticks. The conversion was made this time by Joe Heaton and took the home side into a 22 - 18 lead with about 10 minutes to play. The instruction came to stick the ball up the jumpers and after a couple of good drives the ball came to jack Field, who had previously been well wrapped up, but on this occassion he stretched his legs and ran went on an arcing run beating the centre, winger and fullback for pace racing 70 yards to score his second of the afternoon, again converted by the skipper Joe Heaton.

At 28-18 the game could have been deemed as won, but this time it was the visitors time to dig deep with Berry scoring his fourth which was converted. In the final minute Rose Bride's number 5 (D Bland), who had also impressed throughout broke free down the wing to level. The rest is history as they say.

A great game from both sides with defensive work coming on top in the 1st half. All the forward worked extremely hard for the duration with Jamie Mc getting through his usual excessive amount of tackling and offensive work. Danny S again set up a great platform down the middle.
Good to see Ellis W back in a Bulldogs shirt and Sam B didnt let us down on his debut. Charlie G did nothing wrong on his induction this year, collecting and driving the ball out well.
A mention should also go to Tom Yates, who sat on the bench today and did not get on the field of play. However, there was no complaint as he supported his peers.

Todays awards from the opposition coach went to

Bruce Martinus

Ben Stevens

Jack Field

Yet again well done guys, the training is paying off, but we know the areas we need to improve.

U13's 24 v OSJ 24

Good game all round from 2 very evenly matched sides. The Bulldogs swept into an early 12 - 0 lead though, with tries from Bruce and Jack. Both of which were converted by Bruce. This was however soon pegged back by OSJ with a couple of well worked tries from their exceptionally fast winger, who worked within very little space available but left the defence standing. This was followed up by a try for Burtonwood after Adam Ireland timed a pass to perfection to allow Jamie McConnell hit a great line and hole and put the ball over the whitewash for his 1st try of the season. Coupled with an extensive defensive effort, making some big hits and often try saving tackles this lead the opposition coaches to award Jamie a well earned Man of th Match for the Bulldogs. This left the half time score at 18-10 for the travelling side.

The 2nd half was much more of a defensive effort for the Bulldogs, who were out scored by 3 tries to 1. With Bruce going over for the visitors. The home side never gave out and took their chances well with a couple of tries scored from kicks and wereby our defence was left flat footed. The ball retention was poor late on from the Bulldogs and we nearly contrived to throw the game but some resolute defence from all 20 involved saw us hold out for a 24 all draw, which neither side could really complain about.
2nd named player was Jack Field who worked the middle of the park well gaining hard yards throughout and third today was Bruce. Ben Stevens also got a mention for th way he ran the game today.
Well done to Tom Yates on his 1st game of the season.

Thanks to Ian and his coaches for thier hospitality and for the way the lads played the game and thanks to the referee.

U13's v Leigh Miners 25th Sept ( 22-16) Win

Another hard game in the Premiership saw the Bulldogs having to fight extremely hard for the win.

The game was played in good conditions, but started badly for the home side when Leigh ran in a couple of tries early on with one conversion. The 1st coming after some good footwork down the middle and 2nd from an excellent cross field kick on the last that was poorly defended.

Burtonwood struggled to get possession of the ball from Leigh and played much of the 1st quarter in their own half.

The dogs however fought back well and scored tries form Jack Field, Phil Dee, Bruce Martinus and James Dalton. Coupled with 3 conversions from Bruce saw the Bulldogs take a 22-10 lead. Not to be undone the visitors came back with a try and goal to leave the final score 22-16.

The Bulldogs made some poor decision making in the last 5 minutes and almost gave the game away turning the ball over on at least 3 occassions in their own 25 mtr area. But the defence held strong the keep Miners out.

Well done both teams and thanks to Tara for refereeing today.

U13's 20 v Wigan St Judes 16

I appear to be repeating myself week in, week out. Another fantastic game in a very tight league. Wigan St Judes came down to Burtonwood on top form having lost only once so far. However, they started slowly and the Bulldogs swept into an early 10-0 lead with tries from Joe Heaton and Jamie McConnell, both after some superb handling midfield. Joe scoring under the posts after a well timed pass from Bruce. The second was scored out wide on the left hand side when Bruce again changed direction of play beating a couple of the opposition with a jinking run before laying off Jamie, who powered over the line.

This appeared to spur the visitors on and they came back with a try following some strong running by their forwards, who came from deep and ran at speed. This left the half time score at 10-6.

With the wind at thier backs Burtonwood thought they would be able to play the game in the opposition half, but this was not the case as the Judes constantly attacked down the middle, which were repelled by some equally good tackling from Burtonwood forwards. However, Jack Field stretched the margin again with a strong run outwide, this was supplemented with Bruce's 2nd conversion. Not to be outdone, the Wigan side came back again and scored a try outwide when the fullback layed a great ball off in the tackle to allow the winger to stroll over. The match ebbed and flowed in the middle with strong running and tackling from both sides.

But Judes continued to press and levelled the scores at 16 a piece with a hard earned try from one of their forwards.

This was not to be the end of the affair thoughs as the dogs cleared their line well and moved the ball outwide again to Jack, who once more stretched his legs to go in for the final score of the day leaving the result at 20-16.

Judes never gave up an were unlucky not to level the scores on a couple of occassions when tires were ruled out for a knock on over the line.

Todays nominations from the opposition coaches went to third place for Jack Field for his all round effort, 2nd went to Joseph Frith who was secure at full back, tacking every ball that came at him confidently and making some relieving runs. His tackling also help secure the game. Man of the Match today went to Danny Stewart, who won by a country mile following his extra effort from prop, constantly making valuable yards down the middle and defending superbly.

Well done to both sides on a great spectacle, thanks to Gary and his team for helping make the game what it was and well done to the Bulldogs for holding out for the win.

Thanks to the referee.

Rylands Sharks 14 - U13's 34

Another outstanding performance from a dominant Bulldogs 20 in the final match of the regular season saw the travelling side finish with their 4th win of the campaign against local rivals Rylands Sharks.

The game opened and closed with long range tries from Jack Field who was unstoppable in attack today. However, the 2nd try from Joe Heaton was possibly the pick of the bunch today with some great handling on the right hand side seeing the ball go out wide before being quickly switched back inside by Jamie McConnell with Matty Barton and Bruce setting Joe on a straight run to the line. This 2nd try was, as per the opener, converted by Bruce.
Jack then went on to score his 2nd try, which was quickly followed by Burtonwoods 4th from Bruce, in the right hand corner, again after some fine passing. The Bulldogs 5th in the first half, brought Jack his hatrick and left the half-time score at 24-0.

All of this was made easier with the countless penalties given away by the Sharks

Danny Stewart had again set the benchmark in the forwards with devastating runs up the middle of the park and when Sam Brown came on to spell Danny he continued to cause damage in midfield leaving a number of defenders on the floor on numerous occasions. Matty Barton at hooker set the platform for both the backs and forwards to run off with excellent distribution.

The 2nd half started in much the same way with Jack scoring his 4th. To be fair to the home side they did not give up and forwards rallied and burst over for a couple of tries down the middle from short range. Jack then went on to complete the Dogs scoring with his 5th of the day, before Rylands completed the days scoring.

Final score Rylands Sharks 14 Burtonwood Bulldogs 34.

The whole of the 20 guys played well today with Joe Frith safe as usual at full back, Brad and Matty D held the left hand side and Joe Mannion and James Dalton put in and extremely hard hitting defensive display. Ben Stevens ran the game well with Bruce at half backs and an early 2nd half quick thinking ball steel left the hosts wondering what was happening. Chip Hemsley got through his share of the forwards work with Phil Dee and Jamie McConnell produced another magnificent tackling display. Captain Joe Heaton lead the team well and worked hard for his try. Charlie, Callum and Dominic came on and covered well in the centres and wing and Adam I fell in for Matty B in the 2nd half. It was good to see Joe Bruckshaw turn out for his first game for the Bulldogs after a 6 month layoff through injury. Big thanks to Matty Issa for turning up and supporting the side whilst injured.

This win today has left the U13's 2nd in the table at the end the regular season, which has surpassed all expectations. Well done one and all.

MOM Jack Field

No2 Danny Stewart

No3 Matty Barton

Yes it's back after a few years absence the fun is back.

Compete against your team mates, family and friends and see if you are a budding Tony Smith or Dennis Betts. Pick your team and keep an eye on the scores and performances and see if you can steer your team to the big prize at the end of the season "NO" not the grand final but "The Bulldogs Fantasy Champion"

To get an entry form please email andy1marsh@yahoo.co .uk or speak to team reps or coaches who should have the entry forms by Saturday. You have two weeks to pick a team and get your entry back in.

It is only £5.00 for the season so great value and it also raises much needed funds for the club.

Thanks and Good Luck

Burtonwood U10's vs Blackbrook

The Bulldogs had a rude awakening to the season at their first game away at Blackbrook.

The game started well, where some great defence held out a couple of early challenges, however, as the game progressed, the team with the most fresh substitutes won out. Finally winning by 4 tries - 2.

There were some encouraging individual performances and our attacking play was very welcome.

Special mention should go to Joe Payne, Rich Hansley, Joe Barnes, Declan France and George Roby in defence and to Joe Barnes, Oliver Smith, Matt Santos, Adam Kirk, Declan France & George Roby in attack.

Finally a big welcome to James McKenna on his first outing with the team. James will be a big addition to an already powerful forward pack.

Well done boys and let's confidently look forward to next weeks home game v Crosfields.

Thatto Heath 16 - U13's 30

Good result to start the season, after a hard closed winter season. 30 points to 16 win against a Thatto Heath side that moved the ball well across the park. However, the work that has been put into the defence over the last 2 month paid off.

Jack Field grabbed 3 tries complemented by a brace from Bruce Martinus, all of which were converted by Bruce.

Bulldogs lead 18-0 half time but Thatto came back strongly, with the strong running 10 doing his best to break through the line of the Bulldogs and eventually came up with a try, which had been preceded by a try from Thatto 6, which was well converted by the 3.

At this point the score was 18-10. The lead was then increased fro the Dogs to 24 - before Thatto again came back with a try by the also impressive 13, before Jack sealed the game with a long range effort from the base of a scrum in our own 20.

MOM was Jack Field, No 2 was Bruce and No 3 was named as Jamie McConnell who played well in his first game as prop.
All 20 players should be complemented for their defensive effort, in both shape retention and tackles made.
Well done guys.

U10s 16v14 Crosfields

A great second half performance by the boys ensured a narrow win against local rivals Crosfields.

The visitors showed plenty of skill and flair in passing the ball out wide to hold a 1 try lead at half time, with 2 well earned tries out wide. Joe Payne, however, scored a breakaway try in the first half, showing great pace down the left wing against the run of play.

Following Steve's team talk at the break, the boys stuck to his advice and started tackling as a team which restricted the visitors' passing game. They managed another well earned try to edge 2 scores in front before the game started to swing in Burtonwood's favour. 2 later tries from Matthew Santos and Joe Barnes levelled the scores.

Special mention should go to Oliver Smith who had his best game to date for Burtonwood, Joe Payne and Aaron Lee, who covered the defence out wide coupled with some strong running

The difference between the 2 sides was the extra conversion, and both sides can be proud of their effort in what turned out to be a fantastic game between two very good U10s sides.

Burtonwood White Bulldogs U16's away v Hindley

A strong first half performance saw Burtonwood 8-0 up at half time with tries from Robson Boyne and Joel Albiston. After half time, Hindley came back into the game, but a great breakaway try by Brad Allen, converted by Chris Joynson put us back in control. Hindley fought back to level, but Burtonwood hung on for the point with some determined defence in the last couple of minutes.

U13's 32 v Wigan St Pats 8

A good win for the Bulldogs this morning, however they did not make easy for themselves and neither did the opposition.
The atch commenced with St Pat camped in Bulldogs half of the field, a good defensive effort hoewver held the line and after 10 mins Jack Field raced away from our own half to score probably against the run of play. The conversion was slotted over by Bruce. The Bulldogs then kept the pressure on themselves by continually turning the ball over, often in our quater, which to be fair was also due to some great tackling and line speed from the opposition. The line could hold the sustained pressure and after some good handling Pats went over in the corner on 17 mins. This was soon followed up with a 2nd a couple of minutes later, both conversions were missed but left the home side with a deficit of 8-6 at half time. Generally this would have been put down to completing only 2 of the total first half sets.

The 2nd half was a much brighter affair for Burtonwood, when a keen refereeing decision gave the Bulldogs a penalty from the kick off. Jack Field took the ball from a standing start and went 50 yards to score under the posts, which was again converted by Bruce. On 6 minutes Bruce then followed up his conversion with a try from within his own half beating and number of the opposition with his trademark sides step to go over in the corner, this was superbly converted from the touchline. It was then left for Jack to complete his hatrick again converted on 10 minutes. 5 minutes later Bruce again went over following some good handling before Ben Legge went over in the corner following a great kick from Ben Stevens, whereby the winger raced to beat the opposition to the touchdown, for the well deserved score. This move had nearly come off a couple of sets before with the ball just beating Ben to the touchline.

Overall good defensive stint but need to work on the ball retention and focus.
Real positive was Dominic Gregory, starting his first game at second row, running hard and tackling well. Danny Stewart never took a backwards step.

Picked out by the opposition was Jack Field MOM, followed closely by Bruce Martinus and Ben Stevens.
Keep up the effort guys but more hard work on the training pitch to come.
Well Done

U11s v Thatto Heath - 4th March 12

An eagerly awaited first match following the long winter break to welcome the start of the new summer season for the U11s.

Driving down Farmers Lane, the outside temperature was a chilly 3 degrees on a damp and overcast morning. Thankfully temperatures soon rose when kick off arrived.

The U11s running into a stiff breeze really struggled in the first half missing tackles and dropping ball. Thatto Heath scored three excellent tries from their number 7 from a mixture of his individual skill, speed and strength and from some uncharacteristic sloppy defending. Two tries converted.

Half time: Bulldogs 0 Thatto Heath 16

A firm half time chat (along with jaffa cakes!) soon changed the flow of the game with the Bulldogs getting on the scoresheet with a well worked Cameron Henderson try on his debut from a teasing grubber from Nathan Ashbrook. Conversion missed.

This lifted the Bulldogs as they slowly started to dominate the strong Thatto Heath side with three further unanswered tries from Nathan Ashbrook (2) and Aidan Doyle. Two conversions put the Bulldogs ahead by 4 points and the referee blew the whistle for full time and a very hard fought victory for the Bulldogs.

A tale of two halves with the stiff breeze making a huge difference to two very well matched teams. All credit must go to the Bulldogs side for turning round a 16 point half time deficit to come out with the spoils and showing great teamwork and spirit with some players missing on the day.

Man of the Match: Nathan Ashbrook

Top Attack: Cameron Henderson

Top Defender: Taylor Clare

Coaches Award: Aidan Doyle

U11s v Blackbrook Royals - 11th March 12

The Bulldogs fresh from their opening win against Thatto Heath faced their St Helens rivals - Blackbrook Royals.

Against a team they had never defeated, the Bulldogs went into the game with a full squad bar the injured Max Nicholls in high hopes on a dry, still and warm day playing on a firm pitch perfect for what would turn out to be a fantastic spectacle for both sets of supporters.

The key to the game was for the players to believe in themselves, play for each other and not take a backward step against the formidable Blackbrook side. Players and parents were not disappointed as the Bulldogs produced arguably their best ever performance to take the spoils in what was a fantastic spectacle for U11s rugby to record a well deserved 16-12 victory.

All 18 players on display did themselves proud in a truly committed performance.

Try scorers were Aidan Doyle, Tom Baines and Nathan Ashbrook with two of the tries converted.

Man of the Match as voted for by Blackbrook coaches was Tom Baines

The Bulldogs coaches could not pick out stand-out performances from any one of the 18 players as this was truly a TEAM effort against a quality Blackbrook side so the Top Attacker, Top Defender and Coaches Award trophies were shared between the whole squad.

A special thanks to Dave and Jimmy from Blackbrook for their hospitality on the day.

U10s 30 v 6 Saddleworth

A 10 man under 10's overcame the heavy pitch and tough opposition in style by winning 30-6 in what turned out to be an unexpected one sided game.

Just as we did last week, our defence was quick and we were able to stifle any potent attack from a spirited home side.

Tries from Joe Barnes, Aaron Lee x2, Declan France, a dummy half rush from Richard Hansley and a massive forward burst for James McKenna sorted the points out. It was the the persistent defence that won the game.

Let's not undo the magnificent attacking play, however! Some barnstorming midfield runs from Adam, Declan, Olly & Aaron Lee kept the home side in their own half for long periods, coupled with some instinctive positional play from Joe Barnes when Saddleworth kicked was a joy to watch.

Well done boys, everyone played their part today in a game that could easily have been a different result.

Burtonwood U10's vs Woolston

The U10's pulled off another convincing display against a much improved Woolston Rovers at Monks sports club on Sunday morning.

Tries came from Joe Barnes x 2, George Roby x 2, with Matthew Santos & Joe Payne grabbing a try each.

Without any substitutes and in warm sunshine, the team backed each other up well and each drive covered some good yards. On several occasions the forwards took the game well into the oppositions' half, leaving the backs to complete some great passing moves to score out wide.

Yet again our defence remained solid with every player taking their part in keeping the opposition down to only one score.

The best part of the game was watching the boys pass the ball around, even when on a couple of times the ball was spilled, the lead up to it was great to see! Furthermore, although the ball was spilled, it was deep into their half.

A big thanks to Woolston for playing a spirited game and it's good to see the team improving year on year.

Finally, well done boys for offering us parents a good game to watch.

25th March U13's 6 Leigh MR 8

Hard fought game against the visitors from Leigh, who outscored the Bulldogs 2 tries to 1.

Some hard work in attack being done by Phil Dee and Danny Stewart. However the Bulldogs went behind after some slick handling from Miners.
Just prior to half time an injury to Ben Legge meant the game was halted, whilst an ambulance was called.

The second half started brighter with Joseph Frith running in a try after some slick handling in midfield. which was converted by Bruce to give Burtonwood a slim 6-4 lead. There was some disapppointingdefence in midfield with slow line speed, which eventually led to Leigh's 2nd try on the outside.
Some good tackling but also some poor efforts.

Quite ineffective with the ball and not much offered in the lines of run.

Need more effort next week boys but take the postives aswell

NWC Cup U13's v Wigan St Pats 34-10

Good win in the 1st round of the NWC Cup 34-10 against a spirited St Pats side, who matched the Bulldogs in the 1st half.

The game started well for the home side with Jack Field scoring a breakaway in the 1st couple of minutes converted by Bruce Martinus. However, the visitor came back well and snuffed all of the attack out from the Bulldogs and eventually scored themselves after some good work with the No 4 Tymon going in after some good handling. Both defences held strong until Matty Barton spotted a gap and went himself diving over brilliantly, with the goal being slotted over by Bruce one more. This was followed up by another great try from James Dalton on the last tackle after a great offload from Jamie McConnell, who had picked the ball up off his toes like a pro. The Bulldogs went in 16-4 up at half time.

After the break the Bulldogs tightened up snd spent a significant amount of time in the opposition half. This eventually led to Jamie McConnell going over centre field after exceptional distribution from Matty Barton and Ben Stevens. Conversion by Bruce. The ball retention by the Bulldogs was much improved on this performance with very little turnover, however the carry could always be a little better. Jack Field then score his second after some good passing, successfully converted by Bruce. The final try came from Phil Dee after Adam Ireland came down the short side and fed on to Phil who hit the line at pace and rounded the Pats full back, who otherwise had missed very little during the course of the game. The scoring for the Bulldogs was rounded off with Burce's 5th goal. Never giving up St Pats continued to attack an were rewarded with a converted late try, by number 11 after some hard work down the middle of the park.

Man of the Match today went to Joe Heaton who had a captains performance in both attack and defence. Running at the line straight and with pace at every opportunity. No 2 was Phil Dee, who never stopped all day making bust after bust and gaining valuable yards throughout and was well deserved of his try. 3rd today was Matty Barton, who's contribution today cannot be overstated wreaking havoc in attack with superb distribution and line attack and again well deserving of his try.

Great work all round, it appears the training is coming off with the handling display being much improved along with the ball retention. Need to step up on the defensive line speed, but 2nd half was a lot better.

Well done 1-17. Thanks to Pats for a game played in good spirits and to the laws of the game.
Cheers Joe and your team.

Thanks to Tara for a good refereeing performance always having control of the game.

Oldham St Annes v Burtonwood U10's

In what was one of our tougher encounters this season, the U10's team defence held out in the second half to keep the opposition scoreless for the final 20 minutes.

The first half was a real tussle, the opposition making some big runs against an equally big defensive line from the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs ending the half with tries from Matthew and George, and keeping their noses just in front with the HT scoreline at 12-10.

After the break the boy's started to turn on the style whilst maintaining their steadfast defence. Another try from George, along with tries from Joe Payne and Declan were helped by some great attacking play from Joe Barnes, Adam and a great break from Aaron Lee.

As with last week, the boys threw the ball around to great effect and the benefits are paying off, some quality work from the half backs is enabling us to score out wide. This is not only good for the spectator, it is starting to pay dividends in the tougher matches.

Another fine win and another great team performance all done in honour of their team-mate Charlie who is poorly in hospital.

Get well soon Charlie, well done boys.

Blackbrook Royals v Burtonwood White Bulldogs

Burtonwood White Bulldogs were almost back to full strength today, after a couple of games with only 13 available. Almer Tagayuna and Josh "Chopper" Drury returned from injury and we welcomed Luke Cunningham on his debut.
A scrappy first half finished with the home team 10-4 to the good, with Lewis Jones scoring Bulldogs only try. After falling further behind early in the second half, Bulldogs rallied and exerted some real pressure. It was only some tremendous defence from Blackbrook that kept Burtonwood down to a single Troy Prince try in the second half. The match finished with Burtonwood pushing hard for another score.

Burtonwood Whites U16's v Oldham St Annes

Burtonwood were largely in control in the first half, going in at half time with tries from Luke Cunningham and Robson Boyne and a conversion by Chris Joynson. Some scruffy play and a failure to complete sets restricted the scoring and as the second half progressed it looked as though the missed oppurtunities would prove crucial. Oldham fought their way back into the game, with a terrific break-away try a highlight for them. Josh "Chopper" Drury scored Bulldogs only points of the second half with a try in the corner, which proved to be the match winner as Burtonwood hung on.

Waterhead U10s v Burtonwood U10s

Another great win for the U10's away this week at Waterhead.

Some sterling performances from all the forwards laid a great platform for the backs to start throwing the ball around with great effect.

Two tries apiece from George and Oliver were backed up by tries from Aaron's Hitchen & Lee and Joe Barnes.

The first half was defined by play that probably no other side could have stayed with! Solid defence backed up by 3-4 big drives and finally great passes out wide led to a 24-6 lead at half time.

Full credit to the home team who decided to make a game of it in the second half, when their big lads started to test our defence leading to a few tries out wide. Not to be outplayed though, Burtonwood dug deep, forcing a few errors and winning the possesion again to narrowly win the second half.

A special mention to the new boys Max & Tim who slotted seamlessly into the team and a welcome return to Charlie who made us all realise what we've been missing this year!

Well done boys and don't forget we've got two massive games coming up with Newton Storm followed by Leigh East.

Bulldogs U10's v Newton Storm

As the rain came down in buckets, Burtonwood played what has got to be one of their best games against one of the better teams in the NWC league.

With no dropped balls in the wet conditions, the boys played skillfully and steadily to earn a result that nobody would have called before the game.

Yet again, our defence proved clinical and well measured against the enterprising Newton players, forcing several knock on's and regaining possession.

The boys were also great in attack. Everyone put their hand up to carry in the ball and share the workload and, despite the conditions the backs threw the ball around to great effect.

Two tries each for George & Joe Barnes, backed up by a well worked 4 pointer from Matthew and a great solo effort from Aaron Lee sealed the result of the season so far.

At the final whistle, the rain turned into hail, however, nothing could dampen the boys' spirits as they basked in another fantastic team victory.

Finally, thanks for providing such a great spectacle on a miserable day, especially as one of the coaching staff appeared to be suffering from a banging hangover!

Bring on Leigh East next week.
